Understanding the needs of a small business owner

by Adam Arnold
The word entrepreneur gets thrown around a lot, but I prefer to focus on small business owners. I hear Entrepreneur and I think of the guy from Wolf of Wall Street, slinging cash around with a beautiful wife on their arm (To be clear, my wife is beautiful…hope I wrote that exactly as you requested dear). Ultimately, when I think of someone brave enough to start their own small business there is a mindset associated with it. That mindset is the ability to persevere through all the tasks associated with starting a small business. Taxes, Cash Flow, Marketing, Sales, and Operations.
Most business owners master one of these areas but struggle with the rest. And because you’ve had to solve every problem yourself, you instinctively involve yourself in all aspects of the business. That’s a strength—but it’s also a limitation.
Key Considerations for Growth
- If your business depends entirely on you, growth becomes impossible without cloning yourself.
- If your presence is required for everything, the business has no standalone value.
- Experts get paid because they’ve already faced the pitfalls and know how to avoid them.
- Risk is inherent in every decision. Offloading some of it to professionals makes good business sense.
- Time is finite. You can’t recreate, reclaim, or undo it—so use it wisely.
How This Relates to IT (and Why It Matters to You)
As an IT provider, we understand these struggles because we face them too. I am a small business owner and have been through these same struggles. I lean on my experience in that realm to help advise clients. Like you, we balance responsibilities, manage risk, and focus on efficiency. Our goal isn’t just to sell you a solution—it’s to help you make better business decisions.
Sometimes that means recommending a product. Other times, it means refining a process. Not every conversation needs to end in a purchase; sometimes, it’s about a fresh perspective, a second opinion, or a simple suggestion that saves you hours of frustration.
We are building relationships with our clients. We may ask you about your family, your kids, your hobbies, we’ll share stories and then get down to business. Sometimes solving business problems needs to start with a conversation about life. Let’s be real people then solve real problems together.
At Keystone, we don’t just manage IT—we execute. We ensure smooth transitions, rock-solid security, and maximum efficiency so your business can thrive. Let us handle the complexity of IT while you stay focused on what matters most—growing your business.
